Maria Immacolata Vassallo de Lopes holds a degree in Social Sciences from the University of São Paulo; an MA and Ph.D. in Communication Sciences from the University of São Paulo; a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Florence, Italy. She is currently a professor at the School of Communications and Arts at USP; has experience in Communications, with emphasis on the Epistemology of Communication, Communication, and Research Methodology, acting mainly on the following topics: the communication field, reception of communication, television fiction, communication methodology. Coordinates the Center of Telenovela Studies (CETVN) and the Center of Communication Field Studies at USP. Creator and coordinator of the network of international research OBITEL (Ibero-American Observatory of Television Fiction) and network search OBITEL-Brazil. President of IBERCOM – Ibero-American Association of Communication (2012-2015). Director of MATRIZes, Magazine of the Post-Graduation in Communication Sciences at USP. Member of the Coordinating Committee of the Graduate Program in Communication Sciences at the University of São Paulo Program. She was a representative of the Communications area at the CNPq (2004-2007) and is a Member of the Board of INTERCOM Trustees as the former president of the organization. Part of the editorial board in national and international journals; published articles and books in the country and abroad in her specialties and is a CNPq 1A Researcher.

Juan Piñón (New York University) is an Assistant Professor from the Media, Culture and Communication Academic Department at the New York University (NYU), and currently is the U.S. Coordinator before OBITEL. Juan’s particularly interested in the intersection of Latin American transnational media corporate dynamics with the established mode of production of U.S. Latino media and the effects on Latinos’ representations. Piñón’s work experience dates back to the early eighties, when he first worked as a television producer in Mexico City, to become later the Manager of Programming and Production at a regional television channel in Chihuahua, Mexico. Since 2007, he holds a position as Assistant Professor at NYU. His previous experience in academic institutions includes working as a Professor at the Department of Communication from 1994 to 2002 at the Monterrey Tech, Mexico City Campus, where he also worked as Media Center Directo from 1997 to 2003. He holds a Ph. D. in Media Studies from the University of Texas at Austin, and a Master’s degree from the Universidad Iberoamericana at Mexico, City.

Catarina Duff Burnay is a Post-Doctorate in Communication Sciences from the School of Communications and Arts of the University of São Paulo (2015) and a Ph.D. in the same area, with the thesis “Açorianidade na Ficção da RTP-Açores (1986-2007)”, from the Faculty of Human Sciences of the Catholic University of Portugal, the institution where she began her academic career in 2002. Invited Assistant Professor at the FCH/UCP since 2011, she is a Secretary Professor at the Faculty and the Coordinator of the Degree in Social and Cultural Communication. A researcher at the Center for Studies in Communication and Culture (CECC) (Media, Technology, Contexts research line), she coordinates the Portuguese team for the Iberoamerican Observatory of Television Fiction (OBITEL). Her main research areas are television studies, television fiction from the perspective of production and reception, production and programming strategies, general public and audiences.
